EPL Referee to Wear Camera TONIGHT
When Crystal Palace and Manchester United go head-to-head tonight, Monday 6 May, a referee will make English Premier League (EPL) history as he dons a body camera.
Jarred Gillett will be officiating the match at Selhurst Park Stadium in London, England, and he will be using a head-mounted device called a “RefCam” to ensure that everything he witnesses will be captured on tape.
The EPL elaborated further in a statement on their official website today: “This footage will not be broadcast live but fans will be able to view it later in the year as part of a programme being produced by Premier League Productions aimed at offering further insight and education into the demands of officiating in the Premier League.”
The league later thanked the two clubs for their participation in the exercise.
According to the manufacturers of the 1.1kg device, it can record both audio and video with more than two hours of battery life.
A RefCam has been used before: in February, Bundesliga referee Daniel Schlager used the equipment for a programme called “Referees Mic’d up – Bundesliga”. The 2-2 draw between Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolfsburg provided thrilling footage.
